Sodium Perborate

CAS Number:7632‑04‑4

Synonyms:Sodium perborate; Sodium borate peroxide; Sodium peroxoborate; SPB; monohydrate, tetrahydrate

Chemical Formula:Na₂B₂O₄·nH₂O (monohydrate or tetrahydrate typical)

Molecular Weight:~99.8 g/mol (monohydrate), 153.86 g/mol (tetrahydrate)

Product Introduction

A white to slightly yellow crystalline powder, hygroscopic and moisture-sensitive. Releases hydrogen peroxide and oxygen upon hydration, serving as a mild, stable oxidizer. Widely used in detergents, cleaners, tooth-bleaching, antiseptics, and organic synthesis as a safer H₂O₂ source

Physical & Chemical Properties

Property Value
Appearance White to yellowish free-flowing crystals/powder
Odor Slight, none significant
Density ~1.48 g/cm³
Melting/Decomposes ~60 °C (tetrahydrate)
Solubility (H₂O @20 °C) ~23 g/L (tetrahydrate)
Hygroscopicity/Stability Hygroscopic; decomposes to release O₂ with water/base

Applications

  • Detergents & cleaners:oxygen bleach in powders and laundry formulations
  • Tooth and cosmetic bleaching:used in dental and hair products (some regions banned)
  • Antiseptic/disinfectant:slow-release oxidizer in solution
  • Organic synthesis:mild H₂O₂ surrogate, oxidizes thioethers→sulfoxides/sulfones

Safety & Handling

  • Oxidizing solid; intensifies fires when in contact with organics. May irritate respiratory tract, skin, eyes. GHS: H272, H302, H335, H318. Handle with PPE in dry, ventilated areas; store sealed, cool, dark.
