Methanol is the simplest alcohol— a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid with a mild alcoholic odor. It’s chiefly used as a feedstock for formaldehyde, acetic acid, MTBE, and various solvents, and also finds use as a fuel, antifreeze, lacquer thinner, and denaturant.
